Wildcats for Literacy

Logo

Did you know there are children in Arvada who live in households without age-appropriate books? Neither their parents nor the schools and programs they attend can afford to buy books at retail prices.

Learning to read is critical to a child’s success – both in school and in life. Literacy is one of the best predictors of a child’s future success. But a child without access to books won’t have the chance to become an engaged and capable reader – see more at: http://www.firstbook.org.

Help us fight illiteracy in Arvada! Last year, we created the Wildcats for Literacy program. Our cross country team will work with the award-winning non-profit organization First Book, to purchase brand new books for children at Allendale Elementary School.

What is First Book?

Working with publishers and corporations, First Book makes new, high-quality books available to children from low-income families and the schools and programs that serve them.

First Book addresses a basic problem facing poor children in America: THEY DON’T HAVE BOOKS. — Nicholas Kristof, The New York Times.

First Book has been awarded four stars – the highest possible rating – by Charity Navigator, the nation’s premier charity evaluator. First Book is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization – all donations to our Wildcats for Literacy program are tax-deductible.

What do you need to do now?

We need your help to raise funds to purchase books for Allendale. On average, books cost approximately $3.00 each. Using the attached form, collect donations from your family, friends, teachers, coaches, and neighbors. We accept cash or checks payable to First Book. Donations are due no later than Wednesday, November 9. Please give donations to Della.

What will we do with the funds?

Allendale needs our help! They are participating in a pilot reading program this year. They have already seen results in the children’s reading levels, and the school year has just begun. For their program, they received 1 copy of each book. In order for the program to run effectively, it would be helpful for each child to have a copy of the book to read. The funds we raise will go toward purchasing additional books for their program. The books will stay at the school to be used over and over again by the children. Last year, we raised $800. I think we can do more than that this year!

Can we give books to each child to take home?

Yes! We would like to continue to donate books to each child at Allendale for their home library (to date, we have given them 280 new books and 1,100 used books). Allendale is hosting an event on December 20, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. They would like for us to do a used book drive. We will donate those books to the children at Allendale. So… clean off those book shelves! We will collect books at our banquet. Please do not bring books before then. We will deliver them to Allendale and hand them out at the event on December 20. We will need volunteers to go to Allendale to read stories to the children and give them their books! Please send an email to Della if you can join us on December 20. Family members are welcome too! If we raise enough funds from our fundraiser, we can purchase new books for the children too.

Keep track of your time spent on this activity – it can count toward volunteer hours for NHS (Della will sign your volunteer hours form), and it also looks great on your resume!

We hope you will join us to help eradicate illiteracy in Arvada. We are excited to continue this tradition with the Arvada West Cross Country Team and Allendale Elementary School.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
