Day one of the “Erie Tournament of Champions” proved to be a success for the Wildcat softball team, as they battled back to win over a very strong #7 Legend HS team 8-7, and then earned the dominating 11-0 victory over #9 Frederick!

Timely, explosive hitting was the difference maker for A-West on Thursday, as the Cats pounded out 31 hits between the two games! Game one against Legend was a solid battle… scoreless for 2 innings, Legend got on the board first scoring runs two in the third. A-West would answer back in the bottom half of the inning, with Kailey Robb and Christaana Angelopulos crossing the plate to tie the game at 2-2. Things got shaky in the 4th inning for the Cats, and Legend pushed 4 runners across the plate to take a 6-2 lead…In the bottom of the 5th inning Shelby Robb and Angelopulos singled to get on base. Morgan Clausen belted a ground rule double to score Robb, and Shea Mauser followed with a double of her own, scoring Angelopulos and Clausen. The Cats would go on to score two more runs that inning to take the 7-6 lead! Legend, didn’t back down either— as they again plated a runner, and tied the game 7-7. Going into the bottom of the 6th, Angelopulos stepped to the plate and blasted a solo homerun to left-center to give the Wildcats the only run they needed, and the 8-7 win! Angelopulos, finished the game 3-for-4, with a pair of singles, a homerun and scored 3 runs. Morgan Clausen was also 3-for-4 in the game, with two solid singles and an RBI double.

Game 2 against Frederick HS saw the Cats continue their well executed hitting, and a dominating performance in the circle for Shea Mauser… as A-West earned the 11-0 victory. A-West scored 2 runs in the first, one in the 2nd and two more in the 4th to go up 5-0. The 5th inning proved to be the Cat’s inning offensively, as they plated 6 runners to force the run-rule ending victory. So many Wildcats contributed to the win! Christaana Angelopulos continued to hit the ball well, going 3-for-3 with a single, double and a huge 3-run homerun in the 5th. She drove in 4 runners and came around to score 3 times herself. Gianna Haley was 2-for-4 with 2 doubles, including her final hit of the night which drove in the game ending runs. Shelby Robb finished the game 3-for-4 with a single, 2 doubles and 2 runs scored. Her older sister, Kailey, collected to 2 big singles, an RBI and scored 3 runs. Morgan Clausen hit the ball hard all night, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, 2 RBIs and a run scored. BrittanyAnn Dowell came off the bench to hit a big double in the 5th, to keep the Cats inning alive, and came around to score on Haley’s game ending double!  As impressive as the Wildcats 15 hits on offense were, Shea Mauser matched by overpowering the Warrior hitters in her first NO-HIT, shut out victory of the season. She went on to strike out 12 Frederick hitters to finish the game.

The Wildcats travel up to Erie again today, to face two strong Oklahoma teams. At 12:00pm A-West takes on Grove HS, and then at 2:00pm they play Broken Arrow, OK.
